Abstract

This paper is a preliminary effort to document pro-poor tourism (PPT) strategies and initiatives and to assess the challenges and successes they have experienced. 皇冠体育app first part of the paper defines key concepts and introduces the main ideas that underpin current approaches to poverty reduction. It also reviews research on tourism in developing countries. 皇冠体育app second section analyses the empirical data which supplements a broader research project on PPT initiatives undertaken by the Overseas Development Institute (ODI), the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED), and the Centre for Responsible Tourism (CRT, University of Greenwich). 皇冠体育app third section draws out lessons and implications for stakeholders.
