Multiple deprivations in transitional Chinese cities: a case study of Guangzhou

Abstract

This article applies the index of multiple deprivations to measuring the dimensions of deprivation in the city of Guangzhou, China. 皇冠体育app study uses both population census data and information on minimum living standard support. 皇冠体育app spatial pattern shows the concentration of highly deprived areas in old areas as well as in ex-industrial districts on the outskirts. 皇冠体育app deprivation in old areas is characterized by underprivileged living conditions, while ex-industrial areas present a more income-based poverty. 皇冠体育app authors suggest that this spatial pattern has resulted from underinvestment in old areas before economic reform and economic restructuring of industrial districts under postreform policies.
