Using GOV.UK Wallet in government

GOV.UK Wallet will make it easier to prove in your service that someone is who they say they are.

GOV.UK Wallet will allow GOV.UK One Login users to save and use government-issued documents on their phones.聽

As a government service, you鈥檒l be able to use GOV.UK Wallet to:

  • securely save a digital version of a document you produce, for example a driving licence
  • update or remove documents, for example you could remove a document if it鈥檚 been used fraudulently
  • prove a user鈥檚 eligibility for a service using other departments鈥� documents

Who can use GOV.UK Wallet

Central government departments can:聽

  • add a document to GOV.UK Wallet
  • use the information in GOV.UK Wallet聽

For now, the following will only be able to use the information in the wallet:

  • the NHS聽
  • local authorities
  • all other public sector organisations

Why use GOV.UK Wallet

GOV.UK Wallet will make it quicker and easier for users to access and share their documents with government and private organisations.聽

  • make it easier for your users to prove things about themselves
  • reduce the risk of fraud, for example fake applications and identity theft
  • save taxpayer money by reducing the manual checking of documents
  • reduce the need for printing, saving time and money

How GOV.UK Wallet works

Any documents added to the wallet will be bound to the proven identity linked to a user鈥檚 GOV.UK One Login. That means, for now, a user can only save their own documents in their GOV.UK Wallet.

For security, these digital documents will be stored locally on a user鈥檚 phone.

GOV.UK Wallet will only hold government-issued documents. It will not contain, for example, train or theatre tickets.聽

Using GOV.UK Wallet is entirely optional, and paper or card copies of documents should still be made available.

Adding a document to GOV.UK Wallet

If you鈥檙e a central government department, let us know if you have a document that you鈥檇 like your users to add to GOV.UK Wallet. We can discuss next steps and answer any questions you may have.

Before you can use the wallet, you must already be to prove your users鈥� identity.

Using the information in GOV.UK Wallet

In future, if your service needs to confirm something about a user, you鈥檒l be able to request access to information held in a user鈥檚 wallet .聽

皇冠体育app user will decide if they are happy to share that information with your service or not.

What you can add to GOV.UK Wallet

From summer 2025, GOV.UK Wallet will hold the HM Armed Forces Veteran Card, followed by the full driving licence.聽

In time, the wallet will store government-issued documents to prove a user鈥檚:

  • identity, for example using their driving licence
  • eligibility, for example using a veteran card聽
  • suitability, for example the outcome of checks needed for some jobs
  • qualifications, for example a specific professional qualification needed for a job

GOV.UK Wallet will not hold reminders or letters. 皇冠体育app kind of documents stored in GOV.UK Wallet are either used regularly or need to be kept, for example a user鈥檚 driving licence.
