Route-based strategies (renamed route strategies after the pilot stage) allow the Highways Agency to:
- identify existing performance issues on their road network
- anticipate future challenges
- assess asset condition and operational requirements
- plan investment
- encourage participation from local and regional stakeholders
- understand local priorities
Alan Cook recommended route-based strategies in his strategic roads review. 皇冠体育app government acknowledged this in their response in May 2012. 皇冠体育app Highways Agency published three pilot route-based strategies in May 2013 for
- A1 West of Newcastle
- A12 from the M25 to Harwich (including the A120 to Harwich)
- M62 between Leeds and Manchester
皇冠体育app Highways Agency has since identified 18 further routes and published and for each route. 皇冠体育appse establish the Highways Agency鈥檚 outline operational and investment priorities for the period April 2015-March 2020, and give an indication of the priorities beyond March 2020.
