Test to exclude West Nile Virus in horses
Updated 16 June 2025
Private Veterinary Surgeons (PVS) can submit samples for West Nile fever (WNF) testing directly to Weybridge without an APHA investigation through the Testing To Exclude scheme (TTE).
皇冠体育app TTE scheme can only be used when disease is very low on the differential list and not suspected, but the PVS 聽wants to exclude disease as a differential diagnosis.
Official restrictions are not applied during a TTE. However, if test results suggest disease is present, APHA will initiate an official investigation and may impose restrictions.
皇冠体育app PVS must agree to meet all costs associated with the collection, submission and carriage of samples to APHA Weybridge and all the laboratory test costs.
You must immediately report any clinical changes for the suspician of WNF or other notifiable diseases.
You must immediately report if WNF is considered a probable diagnosis or if another notifiable disease is suspected by calling the鈥 APHA鈥 helplines below. If disease is suspected after a discussion with the APHA duty vet, an official APHA investigation will be initiated.

1. Submitting samples for TTE
If the PVS has determined that WNF is very low on the differential list, they can submit samples directly to Weybridge laboratory through the鈥TTE鈥痵cheme. In this circumstance the PVS is not required to contact APHA before doing so.
Read the guidance on how to submit samples for WNV testing. 皇冠体育app PVS is responsible for collecting and submitting the samples. All the samples must be clearly labelled.
Fully complete the聽. For a TTE the sample will be initially tested by an IgM Ab detection ELISA (TC0868). If both tests (TCO868 and TCO869) are required, this should be noted on the submission form.聽
