Prime Minister on the situation in Egypt

Prime Minister David Cameron said that the Egyptian Government should be "taking steps to show there is a clear, credible and transparent path towards transition".

This was published under the 2010 to 2015 Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government

Speaking ahead of the European Council in Brussels the Prime Minister said:

鈥淔rankly the steps taken so far haven鈥檛 met the aspirations of the Egyptian people. Today Europe鈥檚 leaders have got to show they stand ready to help and support that orderly tradition and actually come together and do that.

鈥淚f we see on the streets of Cairo today state-sponsored violence or the hiring of thugs to beat up protesters, then Egypt and its regime would lose any remaining credibility and support it has in the eyes of the watching world, including Britain.鈥
