Musical artwork heralds final GAC display
Piece inspired by Roger Bannister is part of聽the exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery

An interactive, musical work of art聽celebrating a moment of sporting endeavour is at the heart of the fifth and final (GAC) display.
4鈥�33鈥� (Prepared Pianola for Roger Bannister) by Mel Brimfield was commissioned for the display, and also forms part of the .
A 1920s Steck pianola, a 鈥榖all run鈥� incorporating percussion instrument and聽musical horns combine to聽play a composition inspired by the聽athletes鈥� performance in the race and the聽experimental music of John Cage.

鈥淚 think there鈥檚 something quite British about noble striving rather than success,鈥� said Ms Brimfield. 鈥淚 wanted to make some sort of monument to that and this is the story of this race.鈥�
