Foreign Secretary welcomes Moroccan elections
Foreign Secretary William Hague describes the elections as important to Morocco鈥檚 progress towards greater democratic accountability, and recognises the huge opportunity for peaceful change in the region.

Foreign Secretary William Hague welcomed the holding of parliamentary elections today in Morocco:
鈥溁使谔逵齛ppse elections support the implementation of the new Constitution passed by referendum in July and are important to Morocco鈥檚 progress towards greater democratic accountability. Across the region there is a huge opportunity for peaceful change, the advancement of human rights and economic development. I encourage each country to follow the path of peaceful reform.
鈥淭his was my message during my visit to Morocco last month where I discussed political reform and declared our willingness to support projects to increase political participation and promote transparency in public institutions through our Arab Partnership Initiative. I also met representatives from a broad range of political parties to discuss the opportunities and challenges they face and was impressed by the willingness of the parties to promote popular participation in the political process. I look forward to working with Morocco鈥檚 new democratically elected government once it is formed.鈥
