Following the celebrations in honour of the Queen鈥檚 Birthday party in Nicaragua in June 2013, Ambassadors Chris and Sharon Campbell took the opportunity of visiting one of Nicaragua鈥檚 top tourism destinations to experience more of Nicaragua鈥檚 rich culture. 皇冠体育appir destination? Ometepe Island. 皇冠体育app island鈥檚 indigenous name, which means 鈥渢wo mountains鈥� provide a literal description of its topography, as the island was formed by two volcanoes that rose out of Lake Nicaragua. Ometepe was named a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2010, is home to 30,000 people and boasts a long history of human settlement.

Chris and Sharon truly enjoyed exploring this eco-tourism gem and received quite a surprise upon their visit to the museum. Among the pre-Columbian artefacts was a vessel dating from 300BC-500AD, with what appeared to be a Union Jack design on the front!

Indigeneous art from Ometepe

Ometepe is home to impressive indigeneous art.

This mystical island, with its petroglyphs, rock carvings and fascinating culture, was well worth the visit.
