Adult learning for a bigger society
Adult learning has an important role to play in building a bigger society, John Hayes said in his first speech as Minister for Skills and Lifelong Learning.
Mr Hayes addressed the audience at the Adult Learners Week policy conference in London on 19 May 2010.
He said: 鈥淚f we want to build a bigger society as the Prime Minister has missioned us to, then we must recognise the value of community learning to civil society.鈥�
He made the comments during Adult Learners Week 2010, a campaign to encourage people of all backgrounds to give learning a go.
鈥淐ommunity learning involves many people actively pursuing studies either directly related to their working lives or which may lead to further training and subsequent employment.
鈥淎nd when parents are engaged in learning, then their children are more likely to value education and take more interest at school.鈥�
