43rd Universal Periodic Review: UK statement on »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Bahamas

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp UK delivered a statement during »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Bahamasâ€ Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

This was published under the 2022 to 2024 Sunak Conservative government

»Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp United Kingdom commends »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Bahamasâ€ initiatives to work towards ending Gender-Based Violence and sexual assault, particularly through the training of community residents to identify, address and find resolution to these issues.

We recognise »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Bahamasâ€ unique challenges as a SIDS, and the further pressure on resources caused by Hurricane Dorian and COVID-19.

We also remain concerned by the issue of statelessness for those individuals born in the country who are not automatically afforded Bahamian citizenship.

We recommend that »Ê¹ÚÌåÓýapp Bahamas:

  1. Continue efforts to improve prisoners detention conditions, health care and nutrition.
  2. Take effective measures to prevent and end gender-based violence including high rates of domestic violence and femicide.
  3. Review gender-neutral policies in the area of work, education, health and social services.

Thank you.
